Academic Conference Held: ¡®Habermas¡¯s Research on Confucianism and Buddhism and the Future of Dialogue Between East and West Civilizations¡¯ First Official Academic Event in Korea to Commemorate Jürgen Habermas¡¯s Academic Achievements Intensive Analysis of Research on Confucianism and Buddhism in His 2019 Masterpiece¡¦ Pursuing Dialogue Between East and West Civilizations Break News, Political Reporter Kim Choong-lyoul = The world¡¯s first international academic conference to commemorate the world-renowned communication philosopher Jürgen Habermas, who passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 96, and to review his academic legacy, will be held from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on May 29 at the Seminar Room of the Seoul National University Headquarters for International Cooperation (Building 152). The event is hosted by the Seoul National University Institute for Social Development, the Korean Association of Theoretical Sociology, and the Association of Asian Social Thought, and sponsored by the public interest foundation Jungmin Foundation. This academic conference is attracting significant attention both domestically and internationally, not only because it precedes the memorial conference to be held at the University of Frankfurt, Germany, on June 19, but also because, in terms of theme, it focuses on the study of Confucianism and Buddhism contained in Habermas's final masterpiece, *Auch eine Geschichte der Philosophie*. Since Habermas's massive final work, spanning 1,700 pages, was published in German in 2019, and a portion dealing with Eastern and Western religions embryologically from the perspective of Axis civilizations was published in English in 2023, various discussions have arisen in the West; however, there has been almost no evaluation or discussion regarding the research on Confucianism and Buddhism. After Habermas passed away on March 14, numerous eulogies were released—for instance, The New York Times published an exceptional article that comprehensively examined his achievements and paid deep tribute to him—yet nowhere were the implications of Habermas's research on Confucianism and Buddhism mentioned. This can be said to reveal a gap or limitation in Western discourse. Under these circumstances, the memorial academic event to be held at Seoul National University on May 29 is unrivaled and rich in implications. Particularly considering the turmoil in the international order recently sweeping the globe and the gloomy outlook on the decline of modernity spreading through intellectual circles, the future of the dialogue between East and West civilizations—which opened the door to discussion through Habermas¡¯s research, even though he did not present a final conclusion—is of great interest to intellectuals living in this turbulent era. Han Sang-jin, Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University, assessed, ¡°Through his 2019 writings, Habermas provided an important theoretical foundation capable of transcending Max Weber¡¯s Western-centric view of history.¡± He added, ¡°As Weber pointed out, instrumental, technical, and bureaucratic rationality dominates the world today, but we are confronted with the question of what alternative rationality will be formed from the roots of civilization and operate in the future. Weber could not find the answer, but Habermas is opening up new possibilities.¡± The academic conference on May 29 is a meaningful event organized to explore answers to this question. The morning session begins with opening remarks by Lim Dong-kyun, Director of the Institute for Social Development at Seoul National University, followed by a keynote address by Han Sang-jin, Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University. The theme of the keynote is ¡°How to Read Habermas¡¯s 2019 Writings? Exploring the Common World Between Beyond Polarized Camp Conflicts.¡± Through this presentation, Professor Han actively utilizes the theoretical perspectives he developed at the recent academic event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Middle People Theory. The academic conference on May 29 is a significant occasion designed to seek answers to this question. In his keynote address, Professor Han Sang-jin is scheduled to state, ¡°Habermas¡¯s 2019 writings summarized the learning achievements of Western civilization and presented optimistic elements such as the public sphere, deliberative democracy, and discourse ethics, but his analysis of Eastern civilization remained incomplete. As Habermas¡¯s anxiety and Weber¡¯s pessimism intersect within the ¡®civilization of the age of the Plunderer¡¯ described by Žižek today, we must seek a new dialogue between civilizations.¡± He further emphasizes, ¡°The core is not that civilizations find common ground through interaction, but rather a radical imagination that they developed from the outset upon a common world serving as an ontological foundation. This is a perspective that opens a path for pluralistic coexistence where Confucian, Buddhist, and Christian civilizations can all contribute equally, transcending the privileged status of the West.¡± Following this, Dr. Park Young-do, who has made significant contributions to the study of Habermas and Confucianism, will evaluate Habermas¡¯s research on Confucianism, while Professor Yoo Seung-moo, renowned as an expert on Buddhism, will evaluate Habermas¡¯s research on Buddhism. The afternoon session begins with a eulogy by Seoul National University President Yoo Hong-rim. Mourning the passing of Professor Habermas, President Yoo assessed that ¡°his concepts of the ¡®public sphere,¡¯ ¡®communicative rationality,¡¯ and ¡®discourse ethics¡¯ opened new horizons for the future of democracy and community.¡± He stated, ¡°Habermas deepened modern democratic theory by re-examining reason not as a tool of domination, but as a force for mutual understanding and democratic coexistence. Amidst the crisis of democracy today, his thought continues to provide important insights for reflecting on the significance of civil society and the public sphere. In this regard, I hope this academic conference serves as an opportunity to reflect on his academic legacy and discover new possibilities through dialogue and cooperation across various academic disciplines.¡± The afternoon session will proceed as a dialogue on Eastern and Western civilizations, reflecting on them with Habermas. Professor Hong Yun-ki, a Habermas scholar and translator of *Post-Metaphysical Thought*, explores the dialogue between Eastern and Western civilizations from the perspective of Christian civilization; meanwhile, Professor Kim Seong-mun, who has made significant academic contributions from the standpoint of "Confucianism of Public Reason," explores this dialogue from his own standpoint. Additionally, Professor Kwon Gyeong-rok, who has emphasized the function of sentiment in Confucianism, interprets Habermas's writings from this perspective. In the final session, the comprehensive discussion will unfold as a multifaceted debate exploring Habermas's message regarding today's global turmoil, with the participation of presenters, discussants, the moderator, and even the audience. As the backdrop for this academic conference, Habermas held a full-day *Critical Theory Workshop* with Korean intellectuals from various fields at the Hoam Professor's Hall of Seoul National University on May 10, 1996. Notably, following the recent discovery of audio tapes from 30 years ago, the dialogue was restored through painstaking efforts, leading to the publication of *Critical Theory: The Debate with Habermas in Seoul*. This work is considered a document of invaluable historical significance. The Jungmin Foundation plans to give away copies of this book to attendees of the academic conference on May 29, within the limits of available stock, as a token of gratitude. hpf21@naver.com
